About CAST:

The Centers for Applied Science and Technology is a 501(c)3 network of public-partnership schools working with San Antonio area independent school districts. The CAST mission is to reinvent schooling to maximize options for students, while preparing them for the jobs of the future. CAST has 6 schools in four school districts; the nonprofit is governed by a board representing industry and civic leaders.

Position Summary

CAST Schools has partnered with the Texas Workforce Department of Apprenticeships to offer a program designed to provide an aspiring data analyst with hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to real-world projects. The Data Science Apprentice will receive comprehensive training aimed at preparing this individual for a successful career in data analysis. In this role, you will:

  • Assist in collecting, cleaning, and organizing data from various sources.
  • Evaluate sources of information to determine any limitations, in terms of reliability or usability.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover patterns, insights, and trends.
  • Learn to use statistical techniques to analyze data and generate meaningful conclusions.
  • Develop proficiency in data visualization tools to create clear and compelling visual representations.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with program staff, subject matter experts, and others.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support data-driven decision-making and contribute to the development and improvement of data analysis processes and methodologies.
  • Prepare data for processing by organizing information, checking for inaccuracies, and adjusting and weighting the raw data.
  • Present statistical and nonstatistical results, using charts, bullets, and graphs, in meetings or conferences to audiences such as clients, peers, and students.
  • Conduct multiple simultaneous tasks and prepare ad hoc analyses and reports.
  • Participate in regular training sessions and meetings to enhance technical and analytical skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a CAST Schools graduate or current 12th grader who will graduate in June 2024 or prior
  • Not enrolled in a college/university for the 24-25 academic year
  • A valid Texas Drivers License or ID
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Comfortable interacting with high school students

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A passion for mathematics, statistics, or computer science.
  • A participant in the Texas Ready to Work Program
  • Experience creating pivot tables in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets.
  • Knowledge and skills in data analysis and visualization is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of data analysis tools and programming languages such as Excel, Salesforce, or SQL is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
