This year, CAST students will bring the play Three Years of Fear to the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre once again! In 2022 CAST students collaborated with local author Lorenzo Gomez III to adapt his book Tafolla Toro into a play, and they are doing so again this year. The performance and accompanying reflective activities have become a signature event for our incoming CAST 9th graders. The topic of mental health and relationships is always a difficult subject to broach, and our continued engagement with both the book and the play, gives our students an avenue to explore themselves both emotionally and artistically centered around the importance of knowing yourself and your story.
Alternating between shocking stories from Lorenzo’s youth and letters written to his 12-year-old self, Three Years of Fear shows young people how to retake the battle of their mind by dealing with what is true and dismantling the lies that lead to self-deception. In Lorenzo’s journey, viewers will see someone who understands what they feel, knows what they’re going through, and is standing up to tell them: Decide today that you are worthy.

Your support is not just an investment in a play; it’s an investment in the future. Together, we’ll bring mental health out of the shadows and into the spotlight, promoting empathy, understanding, and a brighter future for all.
As we approach the opening night, we want to personally thank our pledged sponsors and donors for making this production possible:
