On Friday, CAST Teach freshmen became certified in how to stop bleeding in a severely injured person through the STOP THE BLEED program. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters.
Instead of being a witness, you can become an immediate responder because you know how to STOP THE BLEED.
By taking part in STOP THE BLEED, students are able to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding. And by the end of the course, the freshmen were able to perform three different techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out:
- How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound
- How to pack a wound to control bleeding
- How to correctly apply a tourniquet

About Stop the Bleed
The STOP THE BLEED® campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, The White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters. Advances made by military medicine and research in hemorrhage control during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have informed the work of this initiative which exemplifies translation of knowledge back to the homeland to the benefit of the general public. The Department of the Defense owns the STOP THE BLEED® logo and phrase—trademark pending.
