From Wednesday through Friday, CAST Med High School was able to take a break from their usual workload inside the classroom and spend some time outdoors thanks to the H. E. Butt Foundation Camp. CAST Med makes this trip with its student body annually, and the students look forward to the hiking, kayaking, and volleyball games that come with it. When asked how he was enjoying the almost 2,000 acres of camp so far this year, one student kept it simple:
“It’s enriching.”
Although the students only spend a few days at the camp, each day is filled with activities to maximize their entertainment. From hikes that give students an overlook of the entire camp to kayaking and fishing, students have plenty of options to choose from in regards to how to spend their days at camp. Students engage in these activities in groups, and develop team-building skills as a result. On Friday, it was time for the students to head back to CAST Med, and although many were sad to leave the H. E. Butt Foundation Camp, their memories of this week will keep them anticipating the visit next year.

About H. E. Butt Foundation Camp
In 1954, the H. E. Butt Foundation acquired 1,900 acres north of Leakey, Texas, to fulfill a long-cherished dream of Howard Butt, Sr., to provide a place where boys and girls, men and women could enjoy the freedom of camp life that had so appealed to him during his youth. Mary Holdsworth Butt joined her husband in this dream. Along with subsequent generations of the Butt family, they progressively developed retreat facilities along the beautiful Frio River.
Today, H. E. Butt Foundation Camp partners with hundreds of qualifying schools and nonprofit groups each year to provide exceptional retreat facilities, free of charge, in the stunning Frio River Canyon. The program especially targets youth in Texas who would not otherwise be able to afford this life-changing outdoor experience.
