For the 6th year, CAST Schools held its annual Speak Up Speak Out (SUSO) San Antonio Civics Fair, hosted at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Over 470 students in grades 3 – 12 from across the greater San Antonio area competed in 130 different teams for the chance to advance to the state-wide civics fair in Austin on March 1. This year’s student participation nearly tripled from last year.
The CAST Schools Speak Up Speak Out Civics Fair is conducted in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life to teach students about their communities and equip them with the tools to make a difference. Students conducted extensive research through interviews, surveys, and by exploring digital and library resources. As students crafted their solutions, they worked with community experts to receive feedback on their proposed ideas. Students learned to activate their voice and discover the power they have to change their communities for the better.
Throughout the competition, over 60 judges from San Antonio’s business and civic communities listened and provided students with feedback. Congratulations to this year’s regional winners who will be advancing to the state competition at the University of Texas at Austin on March 1!
